29. Susan Robey - Vault

2025, Hand-built ceramic paperclay fired to 1220°C, 32 x 21 x 12 cm

With a background in architecture, Melbourne-based ceramic artist, Susan Robey, handbuilds ceramic objects that reflect her depth of interest in architectural spatial ideas, materials and techniques.

With paper-thin cast clay slabs Robey constructs curious objects that dance on a cluster of thin clay columns. She explores architectural form, surface and scale to create the illusion of fragility and perhaps the suggestion of movement and gesture. These architectural creatures examine, reflect and challenge the complex concepts of the built world.

In 2005, Robey was awarded an Australia Council Residency in Rome and recently completed an artist residency at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Japan. Her work has been selected for major international ceramic competitions and exhibitions, including Faenza (Italy), the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale, the Mino International Ceramics Competition (Japan), and the touring USA exhibition Particle and Wave: Paperclay Illuminated.
