George Metropoulos McCauley is a Greek-American ceramic artist renowned for his expressive pottery and narrative sculpture. Working for more than five decades, his practice draws on influences from Asian ceramics, ritual, mysticism, folk art, and his Greek heritage. Particularly inspired by Korean Punch'ong ware and the Japanese Momoyama, Bizen, and Iga traditions, McCauley's work embraces spontaneity, imperfection, and the visible presence of the maker's hand.
Known for colourful earthenware vessels decorated with painterly floral motifs, McCauley is also recognised for his pioneering contributions to wood firing, including his innovative Wood Fire/Redneck Majolica process, and as a leading figure in the low-fire wood-firing movement. His narrative sculptures combine clay with wood, metal, found objects, and handcrafted archival elements, reflecting a lifelong interest in storytelling and material culture.
McCauley has presented more than 30 solo exhibitions and participated in over 400 group exhibitions internationally. A recipient of four National Endowment for the Arts grants and the Roy Acuff Chair of Excellence for the Arts, his work is held in collections across twelve countries. Based in Helena, Montana, he continues to exhibit, teach, make films, and foster international exchange within the ceramics community.
