Collection: Roses Close Up by Karin Motyer

The solo exhibition Roses Close up by Karin Motyer celebrates the timeless beauty and delicate geometry of the rose. Timed to align with Montsalvat’s inaugural ‘Rose Walk’, this exhibition serves as a visual extension of the grounds’ living landscape. Karin’s work captures the rose at its peak – mirroring the fleeting explosion of roses blooming simultaneously outside the gallery walls.

The exhibition Roses Close up will feature a collection of older and more recent works by Karin, exploring the rose from two distinct perspectives. Her bold acrylic pieces ground the collection with rich texture and vibrant colour. Her detailed pencil work zeroes in on the sharp, architectural anatomy of the rose. The exhibition highlights Karin’s skill across diverse textures and techniques held in the historic Wood Workshop Gallery

Karin’s passion for drawing began in childhood, where her early talent earned her numerous art competition awards. This love for creativity led her to study a Diploma in Graphic Art and launch a diverse artistic career working as a freelance illustrator and commissioned artist. A major milestone in her journey was winning the 2007 International Derwent Magic Memories Drawing Competition with a heartwarming portrait of her daughter and puppy.

Karin’s vibrant artwork has been featured in exhibitions across the country, including the Estonian Festival Art Exhibition. Since 2014, she has dedicated her time as a volunteer gardener at Montsalvat. Deeply inspired by nature and Montsalvat’s roses, Karin specialises in using coloured pencils and acrylic paints to capture the delicate, intricate beauty of floral subjects.
